11th Century
Kemenet-Guegant
The village of Kemenet given to a certain Captain Guégant, son of a victorious warlord of the time. Name persists during next two centuries.
1342 during an English attack, towers were burnt, houses pillaged , habitants massacred.
1354 Edward III of England gave the castle and town of Kemenet-Guegant to a Captain Roger David who married Jean de Rostrenen, widow of Alain VII de Rohan, establishing himself politically as well as militarily. In the 15th century the gatehouse was recobstructed by Louis de Rohan, Duke of Montbazon.
In 1486 Louis II of France levied on the Duc of Brittany a tax to fortify the castle against artillery.
In 1542 Marie de Rohan, wife of Jean IV renovated the castle for her own indulgence and installed a roman-type bathhouse known as ‘the queen’s bath’ – the materials for which have been reclaimed from (Vire?) and are to be re-erected soonish.
28th Jan 1795 the occupying garrison of Garde National was surprised by a group of Chouans (local insurgents against Napoleonic repression)

In 1815 Castle abandoned by the Rohan family sold by the state in 1843. Castle fell into ruin and the Motte (mound and tower) flattened in 1928.
In 1860 modern chateau built as hotel.
